Consultation required on decision to ban pigeon shooting – Matt Carthy TD

Sinn Féin TD, Matt Carthy, has criticised Minister Josepha Madigan for failing to consult with those affected before the decision to lift the Summer derogation on Wood Pigeon shooting was enacted.  The National Parks and Wildlife Services, which operates under the auspices of Minister Madigan’s department, announced in recent days that the derogation, due to come into effect on 31st May, would not be in place this year.  The move could have enormous implications for tillage farmers and food supplies.

Deputy Carthy said:

“That this decision was made without any consultation with those who would be affected is not good enough.  The Minister must reverse the move until a full consultation process has been completed with all stakeholders.

“The National Parks and Wildlife Services say that the decision was based on new scientific evidence.  They should publish that evidence and allow it to be scrutinised.

“Farmers and game clubs are vital stakeholders in wildlife preservation.  It is not acceptable that decisions that could have enormous implications for farming and for food supplies is made without any engagement with those stakeholders.  Minister Madigan must resolve this matter immediately”.

dear sir, there is no scientific evidence to close off these derogations. This is personal opinions deriven from senior decision makers within npws.anti shooting/ hunting lobbyists and pressure from the general public. those same derogations are being flouted for 10 years by operating guides in this country. A significant amount of revenue is generated annually by european shooters visiting our country on sporting holidays…the current leglistation wont hold up in a court of law, wherby a visiting guest can only kill woodpigeon if their doing damage to a crop…thier irish guides are aware, but bring money into the equation , this is why we are at this situtation. npws failed to address the tourist shooting and huge numbers of woodpigeon being shot annually. The hotels and guesthouses dont refuse the bookings…why should the born and reared irish sportsmen and women pay the price for a complete ban on woodpigeon shooting until 1st sept..!! Im a farmer, a shooting and fishing man, who ever i invite to acces my lands for sporting activities is nothing to do with the state, its my constitutional right. all stakeholders should have been invited to submit their thoughts before minister madagan concluded with a fair decision that would change the non functional laws, that allow hundreds of european visitors kill woodpigeon and woodcock that is in no way sporting shooting or crop proctection. this is where the issues lie. Most irish shooting people, look after their wildlife in their localitys for generations, and do good conservation works alongside the farming communities. minister madigan was incorrectly informed. Predugice or personal opinion should not deliver an outcome forany of us. thanking you.

Well said Matt Carthy do what you can to overturn this stupid decision. I. Shoot Pigeons for one of the biggest tillage farmers in Co Louth and the damage they do is unbelievable. The farmers can’t control the weather that dos a lot of damage but at least they can ring the likes of myself when there crops are getting hammered by hundreds of pigeons .

I thoroughly agree with Matt Carthy on this issue. We had an extremely mild winter wild bird population were not subjected to extreme hardship. Where is the evidence to support this order??. I challenge those misinformed individuals to exit their little dwellings in the leafy suburbs and openly debate the merits of this ill conceived piece of nonsense. Either “put up” or retreat from meddling in matters you display an inordinate amount of ignorance in. Leave country matters to those who live and work there. After all it is both our home and our office . Time for the Farming Bodieswho are already suffering as a result of poor prices and for the N.A.R.G.C. to proceed at haste to the Courts to recind this order until all evidence is produced and examined thoroughly.

This has all the hallmarks of bowing to the green party to entice them into government. Wood Pigeon could devastate a feild of crop in a matter of days if not controlled.
