FF & FG contempt for Monaghan families on show as Property tax increases hit home – Matt Carthy MEP

At a time when Monaghan families & workers need a break, instead they this week are receiving increased local property tax bills through their letter boxes, says local Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy.

Carthy hit out at Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael who forced through a 15% increase in the tax (Sinn Féin had proposed a 7.5% decrease) at Monaghan County Council.

Speaking this week Matt Carthy said:

“Monaghan families and workers need a break.  Many are already struggling with huge increases in the cost of living including insurance, childcare, rent & mortgage rates. The last thing they need is additional expense.

“But, additional expense is exactly what Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have heaped on them.  At local level they are burdened with this increase in property tax while the same parties in the Dáil are increasing carbon taxes which will mean higher transport and heating costs.

“This is not good enough.  Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael councillors clearly voted to increase property taxes because the local elections are over and they hope voters will forget.  They claim that the increases can be spent on local services but these same parties are the ones that have cut government funding to local councils.

“Sinn Féin is committed to providing workers and families a break and ending the rip-off they face each day.  Therefore, we will continue to campaign for the abolition of the local property tax and for a fair taxation system. We are also determined to tackle the high costs that Monaghan families face such as exorbitant insurance and childcare expenses.

“We intend to challenge the Fianna Fáil/ Fine Gael rip-off of Monaghan families and workers and ensure that voters do not forget their actions.” ENDS
